Contemplate
Built in 1853 as the Mexican government’s customs house, Quinta Bermudez has a longstanding historical legacy as community center and gathering space for the residents of Mesilla. It’s varied uses and the multiple generations that have called it home, either as a Mexican territory or after it’s New Mexico statehood, give it a history and sense of place that transcends not only current ownership but defined borders. It is the perfect location within this culturally rich borderplex area for the contemplation of the concept of “other” and the greater truth that we are all inextricably connected. I have a strong sense of stewardship with this space to share it with any and all who want to come and stay. When I’m home, my door is almost always open to the public, and when I’m away the house is nearly always available to rent.
Equidistant from the more known art destinations of Marfa, TX and Santa Fe, NM, Mesilla itself is an inspiring space off the beaten cultural art path. Beyond the historically rich community of Mesilla, the home itself has been meticulously curated to nurture a contemplative and restorative stay. Whether making meals in the beautiful kitchen, lounging by the fireside or listening to the vast collection of vinyl, the house has been designed to cultivate presentness and connection with self and with others.
The courtyard between the house and the gallery. The bright colors are meant to evoke the Mexico it once was and is the perfect festive atmosphere for community gatherings!
Every object in the house, from the books to the pieces of art are chosen with intention and meaning. Whether listening to the church bells next door or the vinyl collection, there is ample opportunity for contemplation and meditation here.
